17 Pilgrims killed in Pyuthan bus accident

At least 17 people were killed and 8 others injured when a jam-packed passenger bus swerved off the road and plunged on the banks of the Madi River at Gothibang-1 in Pyuthan district on Monday. Chief District Officer Ram Bahadur Karumbang said most of the deceased were Indian pilgrims .

Nine persons died on the spot, two died while being rushed to hospital and five others succumbed to injuries in Pyuthan District Hospital, said police. Fifty-eight people were injured, four critically, in the tragedy. Nineteen injured were referred to Bhairahawa Medical College while others are receiving treatment at the district hospital.

The ill-fated vehicle was on its way to Krishnanagar of Kapilvastu from Bhingri, Pyuthan. Most of the passengers on board were the pilgrims who returned after paying homage to Swargadwari Temple.

"The driver was trying to dial number in his cell phone. At the very time the vehicle skidded off the narrow road," Jamuna Pokharel, who survived the accident, told the Post.

Security personnel of Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force reached the site immediately and rescued the victims with the help of the local people.
