Two new papers suggest that sea-level rise of three metres or more may now be unstoppable.
Two groups of scientists reported this week that a large section of the West Antarctica ice sheet has begun falling apart, and its continued melting seems unavoidable.
If the findings are confirmed, it's likely that this will destabilise the neighbouring ice sheet, resulting in unavoidable sea level rise of three metres or more.
The studies were published separately in Science and Geophysical Research Letters, and both teams came to a similar conclusion through different methods, which suggests the results are pretty legitimate.
The scientists said that global warming caused by human activity has contributed to this collapse, but there may be other factors involved, The New York Times reports.
If there's any remotely positive news to take from the research, it's that sea level rise seems likely to continue relatively slowly for the rest of this century. But then it's set to soar rapidly, throwing the world into crisis (sorry kids).
Thomas P. Wagner, who runs NASA's polar ice programs, said in an interview: “This is really happening … There’s nothing to stop it now. But you are still limited by the physics of how fast the ice can flow.”
After getting over 13,000,000 downloads for my different apps and games, a lot of people have asked me what the secret is. In this post I'm going to share exactly what I do, because the sad truth is most people who start an app business don't make it. What's even worse is they typically are very close, they just make a couple small wrong moves that end up being the nail in the coffin.
RULE #1 - Don't Program It Yourself
This might be controversial, but through experience I've seen more people have success when they do NOT know how to program. I personally can't program a lick and that has forced me to actually spend all my time thinking about the marketing side of the business. If you look at most successful app companies in the store right now, the person running the company is NOT the one actually programming. This is not a coincidence. Even if you ARE a programmer I strongly recommend outsourcing the development so you can spend your time thinking about how to get downloads.
RULE #2 - Model and Improve (aka Innovation is risky)
As the owner of GameAcademy.com, you can imagine how many people come to me with new ideas for the "next big thing" in apps that no one has heard of yet. The truth is, those pan out about 1% of the time. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we think you should MODEL AND IMPROVE.
Jump Pack has been in the top 25 of all apps multiple times and has over 1,500,000 downloads. When we were coming up with the idea for Jump Pack, we didn't try to invent something the world had never seen (there is a time and place for that, but it's not when you are getting started), instead we focused on building a game we KNEW people would like while adding in a few new features that have never been see before. We decided to model and improve.
The game we modelled was the smash hit Doodle Jump. Doodle Jump has made over $10,000,000 and was one of the breakout hits of the iOS app store, but if you look at it, it's surprisingly simple. The graphics aren't that great and the game is rather thin on options. What we did know is people love jumping. A lot. So we decided to take this proven jumping game mechanic and add in better graphics, more powerups and new gameplay features.
It ended up being a good call. With less than $5,000 invested into the development of the game, we have currently made over $130,000. Not a bad ROI:
RULE #3 - Keep Cost Down... and here's how to do it
Keeping cost down is VERY important. It's been one of the big secrets of my success. Believe it or not, after over 13,000,000 downloads and 100 games, the most I ever spent on a game was Jump Pack. The next game we made was Maze+. It rocketed to the top of the app store upon release and made over $30,000 it's first month. How much did it cost to make? Only $3,000. Why? Because we just edited the Jump Pack source code to make that game. A large part of the hard work had been done.
Now, you're probably thinking, "Well that's great, but I don't have a code to edit". To answer that, I have something cool to share with you. GameAcademy.com has grown tremendously since we opened our doors less than a year ago. We now have over 5,000 customers and 150,000 subscribers. We've had over 1,000,000 unique hits to our site in a few short months and our students have over 100,000,000 downloads (collectively) in the app store.
To celebrate our success, and to help new people get started who might be on a shoestring budget, we're giving away one of our best source for absolutely free. Not only that, it's a Match 3 source code so you can make many variations of the most popular puzzle style gameplay currently in the market. This code won't cost you a dime and comes with both the Android and iOS version. It's our way to celebrate our students success, which has been larger than we ever imagined.2
You can download this match 3 code here and we'll also include 3 videos and an 80 page report on how to get started. You'll also get a sneak peek at the GameAcademy team, where we work and how we started. Typically this is the type of high end training code we use in one of our paid packages. This code isn't available anywhere else and will only be made public for a limited time.
The code itself includes the full gameplay including menu, core engine and a few surprises like a lightening powerup. We've created the code so it's very easy to add new ideas, features and improve upon. This is the essence of our model and improve motto and you can experience first hand how to take a proven game that is known to be successful and make it your own. Download this full source code for free here.
With the training you'll get an 80 page report I personally created that shows specific examples of how to monetize your game. Not only will I show you exact tips and tricks we use to make money in our own games, I also scoured the top 25 grossing and documented any monetization paths that were worth noting. Previously this guide was only availble for purchase from our website, but we've included it for free as part of this Match 3 promotion. Grab both the code and training here.
On behalf of GameAcademy.com we appreciate you checking out our site. The game business is the most rewarding and fun business I've ever had the pleasure of being apart of, and if you are looking for a unique challenge that can turn into a real business, then I can't recommend enough to check it out. There is truly nothing better than creating a business that brings joy to millions of people. Before the onslaught of mobile devices, it was near impossible to break into, but now with the tools at our disposal, and outsourcing that is cheap and available, it's easier than ever.
Open Garden on Thursday unveiled a new mobile messaging application for iOS 7 and iOS 7.1 devices that will let iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users keep chatting even when an Internet connection is not available.
FireChat “takes advantage of the Multipeer Connectivity Framework in iOS 7 to give people the ability to chat with those around them,” even without a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection present. “We may think that we depend on the Internet for everything. FireChat proves that it’s not always the case,” Open Garden’s CEO Micha Benoliel said. “People ask me: how does this work without an Internet connection? Thanks to the Multipeer Connectivity Framework introduced in iOS 7, we are now able to deliver a best-in-class peer-to-peer chat experience to anyone with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.” In addition to instant messages, FireChat also supports photo transfers, with the company saying the app has “no significant impact on battery consumption.”
While the app can be used in areas where an Internet connection is not available, FireChat may have an even more useful purpose, and that’s offering a communication method between users in “scenarios such as disaster recovery and public safety.” However, the app only works for users that are within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other. FireChat is available as a free app in the App Store, and it works on devices running iOS 7 or later.
It’s not clear at this time whether a FireChat for Android application will be available later down the road. The full press release follows below. Search crew involved in the hunt for the missing Malaysian airlines reported hearing a new possible "pulse signal" in southern Indian Ocean waters with the same frequency emitted by the plane's data recorders last. This time searchers are very confident that signals detected deep in the Indian Ocean are from the missing Malaysian jet's black boxes. The signals are now vanished and no longer appeared in ping located which suggest the batteries might have died.
Update:For the first time search crews are sending out a robotic submarine deep into the Indian Ocean to see if they can locate any possible wreckage and black box of the plane. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said," Searchers are confident that signals detected deep beneath the Indian Ocean are from the missing Malaysian jet's black boxes." he also mentioned that the search area has been narrowed down because we’ve now had a series of new pings detections, some for quite a long period of time and which is a very good sign. Washington: A team of Michigan State University computer scientists led by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur alum Anil Jain have built the first three-dimensional model of a human fingerprint.
This development will not only help today's fingerprint-matching technology do its job better, but could eventually lead to improvements in security, according to information posted on MSU website.
What Jain, a University Distinguished Professor of computer science and engineering, and his team did was develop a method that takes a two-dimensional image of a fingerprint and maps it to a 3-D finger surface.
The 3-D finger surface, complete with all the ridges and valleys that make up the human fingerprint, is made using a 3-D printer. It creates what Jain's team called a fingerprint "phantom."
Imaging phantoms are common in the world of medical imaging. For example, to make sure an MRI machine or a CT scanner is working properly, it needs to first image an object of known dimensions and material properties.
"In health care, a 3-D heart or kidney can be created," Jain said. "Because the dimensions are known, they can be put into a scanner and the imaging system can be calibrated."
In this case, the ultimate goal is to have a precise fingerprint model with known properties and features that can be used to calibrate existing technology used to match fingerprints.
"When I have this 3-D fingerprint phantom, I know its precise measurements," said Jain. "And because I know the true dimensions of the fingerprint features on this phantom, I can better evaluate fingerprint readers."
While the 3-D model doesn't yet have the exact texture or feel of a real finger, it could advance fingerprint sensing and matching technology.
"Tools like this would help improve the overall accuracy of fingerprint-matching systems, which eventually leads to better security in applications ranging from law enforcement to mobile phone unlock," Jain said.
Members of Jain's team include Sunpreet Arora, a computer science doctoral student, Kai Cao, a research associate in computer science and engineering and research collaborator Nick Paulter at the National Institute of Standards and Technology
Jain, who has a B.Tech degree from IIT Kanpur and MS and PhD degrees from Ohio State University, has six US patents on fingerprint matching and has written a number of books on biometrics and fingerprint/facial recognition.
Additionally, Jain has also received a number of prestigious awards for contributions to pattern recognition and biometrics.

403 Forbidden error messages are sometimes customized by the websites they appear on but for the most part, you'll see them in one of the following ways:
"403 Forbidden"
"HTTP 403"
"Forbidden: You don't have permission to access [directory] on this server."
"Forbidden"
"Error 403"
"HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden"
"Error 403 - Forbidden"
"HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden"The 403 Forbidden error displays inside the browser window, just as web pages do. 403 errors, like all errors of this type, might be seen in any browser on any operating system.
In Internet Explorer, a The website declined to show this webpage message indicates a 403 Forbidden error. The IE title bar should say 403 Forbidden or something similar.
403 errors received when opening links via Microsoft Office programs generate a Unable to open [url]. Cannot download the information you requested. message inside the MS Office program.
Windows Update may also report an HTTP 403 error but it will display as error code 0x80244018 or with the following message: WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_FORBIDDEN.
Cause of 403 Forbidden Errors
The 403 Forbidden error is an HTTP status code that means that accessing the page or resource you were trying to reach is absolutely forbidden for some reason. In other words: "Go away and don't come back here."
Note: Microsoft IIS web servers provide more specific information about the cause of 403 Forbidden errors by suffixing a number after the 403 as in HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden which means Directory listing denied. You can see a complete list here.
How To Fix the 403 Forbidden Error
Check for URL errors and make sure you're specifying an actual web page file name and extension, not just a directory. Most websites are configured to disallow directory browsing so a 403 Forbidden message when trying to display a folder instead of a specific page is normal and expected.
Important: This is, by far, the most common reason for a web site to return the 403 Forbidden error. Be sure you fully explore this possibility before investing time in the troubleshooting below.
Tip: If you operate the website in question, and you want to prevent 403 errors in these cases, enable directory browsing in your web server software.
Clear your browser's cache. Issues with a cached version of the page you're viewing could be causing 403 Forbidden issues.
Log in to the website, assuming it's possible and appropriate to do so. A 403 Forbidden message could mean that you need additional access before you can view the page.
Typically, a website produces a 401 Unauthorized error when special permission is required but sometimes a 403 Forbidden is used instead.
Clear your browser's cookies, especially if you typically log in to this website and logging in again (the last step) didn't work.
Note: While we're talking about cookies, be sure you have them enabled in your browser, or at least for this website, if you do actually log in to access this page. The 403 Forbidden error in particular indicates that cookies may be involved in obtaining proper access.
Contact the website directly. It's possible that the 403 Forbidden error is a mistake, everyone else is seeing it too, and the website isn't yet aware of the problem.
You can often find a website's contact information through a WHOIS search, using the domain name (e.g. mtv.com) as your search term.
If an email address isn't listed, you might have luck emailing webmaster@website.com, replacing website.com with the actual website name. Another option is to contact the site via one of their social networking profiles.
Contact your ISP if your still getting the 403 error, especially if you've contacted the website in question and they say everything is good on their end.
It's possible that your public IP address, or your entire Internet Service Provider, has been blacklisted, a situation that could produce a 403 Forbidden error, usually on all pages on one or more sites.
Tip: See my How To Talk To Tech Support for some help on communicating this issue to your ISP.
Come back later. Once you've verified that the page you're accessing is the correct one and that the HTTP 403 error is being seen by more than just you, just revisit the page on a regular basis until the problem is fixed.
Still Getting 403 Errors?
If you've followed all of the advice above but are still receiving a 403 Forbidden error when accessing a certain webpage or site, see Get More Help for information about contacting me on social networks or via email, posting on tech support forums, and more.
Be sure to let me know that the error is an HTTP 403 error and what steps, if any, you've already taken to fix the problem.
Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company's largest acquisition and bigger than any that Google, Microsoft or Apple have ever done.
The world's biggest social networking company said Wednesday that it is paying $12 billion in Facebook stock and $4 billion in cash for WhatsApp. In addition, the app's founders and employees — 55 in all — will be granted restricted stock worth $3 billion that will vest over four years after the deal closes.
The deal translates to roughly 11 percent of Facebook's market value. In comparison, Google's biggest deal, Motorola Mobility, stood at $12.5 billion, while Microsoft's largest was Skype at $8.5 billion. Apple, meanwhile, has never done a deal above $1 billion.
The price stunned Gartner analyst Brian Blau. "I am not surprised they went after WhatsApp, but the amount is staggering," he said.
Facebook likely prizes WhatsApp for its audience of teenagers and young adults who are increasingly using the service to engage in online conversations outside of Facebook, which has evolved into a more mainstream hangout inhabited by their parents, grandparents and even their bosses at work.
WhatsApp also has a broad global audience. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the service "doesn't get as much attention in the U.S. as it deserves because its community started off growing in Europe, India and Latin America. But WhatsApp is a very important and valuable worldwide communication network. In fact, WhatsApp is the only widely used app we've ever seen that has more engagement and a higher percent of people using it daily than Facebook itself."
