APRIL 11 - Kathmandu.

Around ninety per cent of the street children are found involved in drug abuse in different 30 districts.

A recent study carried out by Chabahil Pashupati Children’s Home found that the street children mostly take drugs to escape from their harsh life and due to peer pressure.

Chairman of the Children’s Home, Bijay Shrestha, said the children are found leaving their homes in the rural areas for cities as they lack homely environment due to their parents’ poor economic condition. These children who leave their homes for the cities end up as street children. As street children, they get into bad habits and start smoking cigarette butts, chewing paan, and consuming alcohol, among others, said Strestha.

The children’s home has carried out the study in the Kathmandu Valley, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and Jhapa, among others districts.

Improving the habit of such children was very difficult, said Arjun Mohan Bhattarai of the Children’s Home.

Bhattarai said the Children’s Home has been carrying out a study on the street children, their protection and care, and is also running rehabilitation programmes for the last 12 years. RSS
