An IDF convoy moving in the area of Har Dov, on the border with Lebanon, was the target of an explosive device activated by Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon on Friday night, IDF sources said.
The explosive device was planted on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
One of the armored vehicles was directly hit by the explosion but no soldiers sustained injuries. However, three of the soldiers were taken to Ziv Medical Center in Tzfat for precautionary reasons.
Military sources concluded within minutes of the attack that Hezbollah was behind the explosion. In response, IDF tanks and artillery fired on and destroyed a Hezbollah post in the village of Kfar Kileh, Lebanon.
Since the incident, there has been no further exchange of fire; however, army sources added that the situation is still ongoing.
A source stated regarding the incident, “The coming hours will tell whether or not this will lead to an escalation.”
The last few years since the Second Lebanon War has seen relative quiet on Israel's northern border with Lebanon, though at times isolated incidents have led to tension.
Most recently, a terrorist cell was identified attempting to plant an IED [improvised explosive device] on the Syrian border earlier in February. The cell was operating on the Syrian part of the Golan Heights, very close to the new border fence. The attack was orchestrated by Hezbollah, according to security sources and an IDF tank fired shells at the suspects, striking them.
In December of 2013 an IDF soldier, 31-year-old St.-Sgt. Maj. Shlomi Cohen from Afula, was killed by cross-border gunfire from Lebanon while driving in an army vehicle. An IDF assessment found that Cohen was hit by shots fired by a soldier from the Lebanese Armed Forces, who apparently acted alone and of his own accord before going AWOL.
