Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has been elected as the new prime minister with a two-thirds majority in the prime ministerial election Monday afternoon.
The septuagenarian leader of the largest political party got 405 votes in the current 571-member parliament, while 148 lawmakers from the 16 parties claiming electoral fraud in November elections and royalist Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) voted against Koirala.
The 75-year old bachelor was the only candidate in the race.
He has become the first prime minister after the second Constituent Assembly elections in November last year.
The election of a new prime minister is expected to bring the constitution-drafting process back on track.
UML, the second largest party, had decided to vote for Koirala following a seven-point deal on Sunday. Some small political parties have also voted for Koirala.
The details of power-sharing with the UML and other parties are yet to be worked out. Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel had propose him as Prime Minister, while UML parlaimentary leader KP Oli had seconded the proposal.
